Obituary

Dale R. Green, age 87, of 750 Frank Ave. SE, Huron, died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Monday, March 20, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening and Monday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday afternoon. The family will be present from 6:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday evening at the funeral home. Dale Roy Green was born on January 5, 1919, to George C. and Julia (Holzgraph) Green at Lewiston, MT. The family moved to Mountain Grove, MO, then to Newell, SD, and in January of 1925, to Huron where Dale has resided since that time. He attended the Huron schools graduating from Huron High School in 1936. He also attended both Huron College and Northwest College of Commerce for a short period of time. Dale was employed by the U.S. Weather Bureau from 1938 to 1951. He then joined his father and brother in the lumber business in Huron as George C. Green & Sons. He retired in January of 1981. Dale served with the South Dakota National Guard (Company C in Huron) from 1936 to 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve on December 8, 1941, and was called to active duty on January 29, 1942. He served at Corpus Christi (Texas) Naval Air Station, Beeville (Texas) Air Station, Sand Point (Seattle) Weather Central, and aboard the carrier USS Siboney CVE 112 in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged as an Aerographers Mate First Class on February 2, 1946. Dale returned to Huron and on March 5, 1946, he married Maxine D. Anderson. He is a life-long member of First United Methodist Church in Huron where he also served as chairman of both the Official Board and the Administrative Board, was a member of the church trustees, Memorial Committee, and Building Committee. His memberships also included the Huron Noon Lions club where he served as President and Secretary, and chairman of the Sight Conservation Committee for many years. Dale was awarded the Lions International Honor Roll Membership in 1982, and in 2006 was a 53-year member of the Huron Lions Club. In February of 1994, he was inducted into the South Dakota Lions Hall of Fame and was made a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions Club of South Dakota. Dale was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, life member of both the William Reaves American Legion Post #7 and the Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776, and a life member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife, Maxine of Huron; 1 son, Keith (Sandy) Green of Aberdeen; 1 granddaughter, Melissa Green of Fort Meyers Beach, FL; 4 step grandchildren, Casey (Amanda) Thorstenson of Aberdeen, Jeromy (Dawn) Thorstenson of Aberdeen, Trenton Lunstrum of Aberdeen, and Trina (Steve) Volk of Vancouver, WA; 3 brothers, Donald (Lynn) Green of Huron, Claude (Marlys) Green of Yale, and Harold Green of Huntsville, AL; 1 sister, Marion Hatfield of Healdsburg, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 1 brother, Wayne Green.
