Connie Cowing, age 78, of Devils Lake, ND and formerly of Huron, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Eventide Heartland Care Center under hospice care in Devils Lake, ND. Her funeral service will be on Thursday, August 1 at 3:30 PM at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Visitation, with her family present, will be on Wednesday, July 31, from 5-7 PM at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Connie Rae Selke the daughter of Clarence and Etha (Skinner) Selke was born on February 4, 1941 in Sioux City, IA. Connie grew up on a farm in the St. Lawrence area attending country school and then St. Lawrence schools where she graduated. Connie earned her degree in teaching at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD.
Connie married Willard Engel in which two children were born, Kathy and Kevin. In 1972, she married Harry Cowing, Jr. and added Jerry Cowing and Sandra Cowing Reynolds to their family.
Connie taught at Huron Public Schools for 42 years teaching mostly second grade. She taught at McKinley, Wilson, Jefferson, Buchanan and Madison. She was Elementary Teacher of the Year in 1991. After retirement, she substitute taught and then volunteered at the elementary level. Connie was an RSVP Volunteer, a part of Retired Teachers, Pony Hill Reading Council and the HEA, SDEA, and NEA.
Connie loved to read mysteries and magazines. She was a world traveler, going many places; Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Sweden, Alaska, Artic, Antarctica, and several places in the US. She loved to collect Norman Rockwell plates and figurines. Connie moved away from Huron to California and North Dakota to be near family until her death.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, Kevin (Tammy) Engel of Crary, ND, Kathryn (Leland) Punt of Palm Desert, CA; step-children Jerry Cowing of Niceville, FL and Sandra Reynolds of Sioux Falls, SD; 9 grandchildren, Dakota, Karsyn, Sydney, Kylee, Keenan, Patty, Brandy, Troy and Tyler; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, and many students.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry Cowing, Jr. in 1996; and her infant sister Marilyn Kay Selke.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have memorials made in Connie's name to BelieveFest, a community school supply give away for Huron and surrounding areas. Memorials can be sent to BelieveFest, 2660 Dakota Ave. S, Huron, SD 57350
