Obituary

Clyde J. Urban, age 57, of 109 2nd St. NE, Huron, died Monday, November 22, 2004, at his home. His funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Monday, November 29, at American Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday morning. Clyde J. Urban was born on July 19, 1947, in Mitchell, SD, to Donald S. and Leanor (Knight) Urban of the Gann Valley Community. The family moved to the Alpena area where he attended all 8 years of grade school at the Wahl School located on the family farm in Jerauld County. He was a member of the Dale Rustlers 4-H club. He attended and graduated from Alpena High School in 1965. After his graduation Clyde worked as a farm laborer, and as auto mechanic. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1966, and was an equipment supply specialist achieving the rank of E-5 within 2 years. After his honorable discharge he returned to the Huron area in 1968, he worked for Cronin Dairy (farm operation) for a short time. On February 16, 1969 he began his career with North Western Public Service Company for the next 30 years. Beginning as a apprentice gasman in the gas department and then later the electric department. He then went to the gas meter shop. Clyde served as a Union Steward for several years. On September 1, 1991, Clyde moved to Webster where he was the Gas Superintendent for the Webster, SD district. On March 1, 1995, he was the Pipeline Safety Coordinator for Huron. On June 1, 1997, Clyde became the Operations Supervisor of the Brookings, SD district. On January 1, 2000, poor health forced him to retire early. He continued to live in Brookings, and enjoyed his favorite hobbies, fishing and restoring Farmall tractors. He then returned to Huron in 2003 where he has lived since that time. On October 6, 1973, Clyde married Sandra (Bratland) Nelson at Willow Lake, SD. He was a member of the American Legion and for many years on the Huron Volunteer Fire Department and later as Captain. In July 1988, Clyde married Jeanette (Grabin) Baum at Huron. He is survived by his mother, Leanor Urban of Wessington Springs; three brothers, Stanley (Lorraine) Urban of Watertown, Franklin Urban of Mesa, AZ and Marvin (Julie) Urban of Great Bend, KS; a brother-in-law Vincent (Kaye) Wagner of Alpena; 7 nephews; 3 nieces; and several grand nieces and nephews; former wife Sandy Urban of Huron; step-daughter Leah Starzl of Mitchell; 1 step-grandson and 2 step-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his father, a sister, Leanne Wagner, and both his paternal and maternal grandparents.
