Obituary

Cleo Johnston, age 82, of 336 Frank Ave. SE, Huron, SD, died Sunday, October 25, 2009, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.

His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, at First United Methodist Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m; or Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.

Cleo E. Johnston, son of Robert and Erma (Florence) Johnston, was born on January 14, 1927, in Huron, SD. He attended schools in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1945.

On April 6, 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in Germany. He was honorably discharged on November 18, 1946. He later served in the South Dakota National Guard at Fort Carson, Colorado, and was honorably discharged on January 10, 1951.

On August 8, 1947, Cleo married Gladys M. Hamilton at the Methodist Church in Huron.

Cleo was employed for the City of Huron in the street department. From 1964-1966 he attended and graduated from Northwest College of Commerce in Huron. From 1966 until his retirement in 1995 he worked for Urquhart/Sibley Motors.

He was a life member and past commander of the Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776; district commander for the VFW; member of William Reaves American Legion Post #7; chairman of the Democratic Forum for many years; and member of First United Methodist Church.

He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed pheasant hunting, celebrating birthdays especially his own, gardening, and visiting with his many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Huron; 1 son, Larry (Dawn) Johnston of Aberdeen, 1 daughter, Linda (Ronald) Baum of Huron; 5 grandchildren, Christine (Heath) Mettler of Norfolk, NE, Jennifer (Rob) Bortnem of Brookings, Becky (Jamey) Moeding of Huron, Darren Baum USAF of Las Vegas, NV, and Daniel Johnston of Sioux Falls; 7 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Verna Bolton of Los Angeles, CA, and Evelyn Dolly Shaw of San Diego, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 son, Donnie; 4 brothers, Lloyd, Leo, Orville, and Lawrence; and a sister, Ruth Crawford.
