Obituary

Clayton LeGrand, age 85, of Virgil passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, June 12, 2015. He was reunited with the love of his life, Katherine. His funeral and celebration of Clayton's life will be 10:30 am Wednesday June 17, 2015 at Virgil United Methodist Church in Virgil with burial including military honors in the Virgil Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be from 5-7 pm Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Welter Funeral Home with a 6 pm prayer service; or one hour prior to the service at the church. Clayton Harry LeGrand was born in Hitchcock on December 17, 1929 to Elmer and Lillian (Mendenhall) LeGrand. He graduated from Virgil High School. Clayton enlisted in the United States Air Force which took him to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. This adventure led him to meeting and marrying Katherine Louise Stroeck. Clayton and Katherine were united in marriage on March 7, 1953. Clayton and Katherine moved their family to Virgil, SD in 1955 to farm. Tough times on the farm led Clayton to a job at Armour and Company Packing Plant. Clayton's health forced him to retire in 1987. Clayton was passionate about family and friends. He had an outgoing fun loving personality that was contagious to those around him. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and card games; especially with his sisters. However, above all other things Clayton mostly enjoyed the times spent with his wife. Clayton will be remembered as a devoted husband. He had a remarkable ability to be a mentor and role model to those he encountered. Clayton was a dedicated member of the American Legion Schmidt Barnes Post #268 in Virgil, SD. He was a 50+ year member of this organization. He was also a member of the Virgil United Methodist Church. Clayton is survived by his four children, Deborah (Douglas) Quiram of Aberdeen, SD, George (Joni) LeGrand of Virgil, SD, Jack (Diana) LeGrand of Wessington, SD, and Robert (Kila) LeGrand of Aberdeen, SD; many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; four sisters, Lonabelle Hein of Huron, SD, Gladys Boomsma of Huron, SD, Gloria (Gunnar) Baatrup of Huron, SD, and Grace (Jerry) Sperle of Sioux Falls, SD; many nieces and nephews. Clayton was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Katherine LeGrand in 2013; one sister, Thelma Maureen LeGrand; one brother, Louis Edward LeGrand, and one brother-in-law, Vern Hein.
