Obituary

Claude Manning, age 89, of Huron, SD, died Saturday, December 22, 2012, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. His funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with burial at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service at the church. Claude Benjamin Manning, son of Benjamin and Virgie (Garner) Manning, was born on May 9, 1923, In Hooper, UT. After attending school in Hooper he went to work for the CCC Camp in Lucind, UT. Following that Claude went to Oakland, CA, where was an apprentice for Sheet Metal Fabrication at Bethlehem Steel, also Alameda, CA, and Alberts Mills, CA. In October 1944, Claude moved to Hawaii where he worked at Pearl Harbor repairing ships and submarines that were damaged during World War II. Claude returned to Utah in February 1946. Claude and Viola M. Gascoigne were married on February 21, 1946, in Ogden, UT. Shortly after that they moved to Pasadena, CA, and later to Ridgecrest, CA, where Claude worked at Inyokern New Naval Base. In 1947, the couple returned to Ogden and he worked for Fox Sheet Metal of Ogden and Twin Falls, ID. In 1951 they moved to Huron and Claude worked for Huron Furnace, later starting his own company, Manning Sheet Metal - Heating & Air Conditioning. He retired in 1997. Claude enjoyed fishing, hunting, working his trade and reading self-improvement books. He always stated, "the biggest room in the world was the room for self-improvement." In the Huron Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Claude served his church as Branch President, Bishop, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School and Seminary teacher, Missionary and Welfare Advisor. In the Sioux Falls, SD, Stake, Claude served as High Councilman. Both Claude and Viola were called as Temple Workers in Chicago, IL; Bismarck, ND; and Winter Quarters-Omaha, NE. He is survived by his wife, Viola of Huron; 2 daughters, Sherrie (Mark) Laidler of Orem, UT, and Audra (Cory) Jenkins of Springfield, MO; daughter-in-law, Mary Manning of Marion, LA; also to carry on his legacy are his 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Cleone Moore of Roy, UT, and Margene (Alan) Montegny of Albuquerque, NM; 1 brother, Gerald (Betty) Manning of Hooper, UT. Claude was preceded in death by his parents; son, Claude Manning, Jr. in 2008; 1 grandson, Marc Sullins who died in 2001 in the 9/11 Twin Towers attack in New York; 4 sisters, Theda, Belva, Margaret and Mary; 2 brothers, Keith, and Ralph.
