Charlotte Buchheim, age 93, of Huron, SD, formerly of Wolsey, SD, died Sunday, February 10, 2013, at SunQuest Healthcare Center. Her funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 15, at American Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Friday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church. Charlotte Buchheim was born Charlotte Junette Jordal, daughter of Alfred and Ida (Luglan) Jordal, on December 1, 1919, at Mt. Vernon, SD. She attended Mt. Vernon schools. She attended college for 1 year and after receiving her teaching certificate in 1939 she began teaching school. Charlotte taught in rural schools in Hyde County until 1945, when she, along with her aunt & uncle, Arthur and Jennie Luglan, rode the train to Washshugal, WA, where Charlotte and Uncle Arthur worked in the shipyards. She worked as a clerk / typist on the graveyard shift, then moved to Camus, WA, and worked as a typist / filer. On December 16, 1945, Charlotte married Irving Buchheim at Mt. Vernon. Over the years they lived and farmed in rural Huron, rural Iroquois, and back to rural Huron. In 1961 they moved to rural Wolsey, and into Wolsey in 1971. In 2008, Charlotte moved to Huron. In 1953 Charlotte resumed her teaching career, and over the next several years, during the summer months, she attended Northern State College in Aberdeen and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education on August 15, 1969. She taught in schools in Beadle County until 1968, at which time she began teaching at Wessington Springs in Jerauld County where she finished her teaching career and retired in 1983. She was a member of American Lutheran Church; and was a lifetime member of SDEA and Weight Watchers. Her many interests included reading, baking, following Duke basketball, and spending precious time with her family. She is survived by 2 sons, Richard Buchheim of Traverse City, MI, and Robert (Renae) Buchheim of Volga, SD; 3 daughters, Carolyn (Robert) Hiles of Wolsey, Connie (Rod) Christopherson of Traverse City, MI, and Cathy (Kelly) Kober of West Chester, PA; 9 grandchildren, Michelle (Paul) Johnson of Wolsey, Kris (Troy) Brandt of Wolsey, Laurie Dicke of Brookings, Angela (Donavan) Gosch of Sioux Falls, Brittney (Adam) Bernfield of Newark, DE, Kaitlyn Kober of West Chester, PA, Jesse Kober of West Chester, PA, Julie (Jack) Nicholls of Aurora, IL, and Lauren Christopherson of West Chester, PA; 12 great grandchildren; and 1 sister, Charline Dittman of Viroqua, WI; 2 sisters-in-law, Alice Buchheim (Wayne) Sampson of Highmore, and Alice Buchheim of Highmore; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Irving on November 21, 1990; 1 brother, Arthur Jordal; 3 sisters, Jeverna (Alfred) Stumbaugh, Iola (Gerald) Zangle, and Arlene (Erwin) Bietelspacher; 3 brothers-in-law, Floyd Dittman, Wallace (Evelyn) Buchheim, and Harold Buchheim; 3 sisters-in-law, Eleanor (Oscar) Jensen, Loretta (Ben) Farnsworth, and LaVerna (Carl) Kutz.
