Obituary

Charles Schultz, age 86, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Huron, died Friday, January 3, 2014, in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 9, at Welter Funeral Home with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday one hour prior to the service. Charles John Schultz, son of Louis and Leona (Reinartz) Schultz, was born on December 31, 1927, in Huron, SD. He grew up in Huron and attended Huron High School. Following his formal education he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge he returned to Huron. On October 25, 1947, Charles married Betty Mae Johnson in Huron. Charles started his career with Armour & Company working in one of the meat departments. He later became a USDA meat inspector. His job as an inspector took him to several cities: in 1962 they moved to Sioux Falls for 2 years; Luverne, MN, for 1 year; then Billings, MT; Watertown, SD; Harrisburg, SD, for 7 years; and finally the Sioux Falls area for the last 10 years. The last several years of his career he was a USDA troubleshooter inspector and traveled to various meat-packing-plant locations as needed. When Charles lived in Huron, he was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church. When not working one of his favorite past times was gardening. He is survived by 2 sons, Mike (Geri) Schultz of Brandon, SD, and Rick (Rhonda) Schultz of Wichita, KS; 7 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Don (Lorraine) Schultz of Portland, OR, and Bill (Carol) Schultz of Ft. Worth, TX; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty on May 2, 2009; 1 daughter, Kay Smith; 1 son-in-law, Michael Smith; 2 grandsons, Thad Schultz, and Marvin Smith.
