Obituary

Charles Chuck Armstrong, age 86, of 2021 Meadowlark Lane, Huron, died Friday, April 14, 2006, at the Huron Nursing Home. His Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 18, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Channel officiating. A private family graveside service will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Charles Henry Armstrong was born on February 12, 1920, to A.F. Shorty and Lillian (Davis) Armstrong at Hitchcock, SD. He graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1937. He worked for the CCC at Wind Cave in the Black Hills for the next 4 years. On October 31, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged on September 29, 1945. He returned to Huron and attended Huron College for 1 years. He began working for the U.S. Postal Service, serving in various capacities, and retiring as Officer in Charge of Postal Operations in February of 1985. On February 16, 1947, Chuck married Fern Miller at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron. The couple have made their home in Huron all of their married lives. Chuck loved being in the outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Over the years he played baseball for Stahls Flyers, softball for Marks Bar, and was the coach of the American Legion Baseball Team. His memberships included First Presbyterian Church, 50-year member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7, Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776, past State President of the Postal Clerks Union, and past State President of the Supervisors Union. He is survived by his wife, Fern of Huron; 2 sons, John (Jeannie) Armstrong of Dubuque, IA, and David (Marie) Armstrong of Hitchcock, SD; 2 daughters, Mary (Mike) Venables of Hot Springs, SD, and Jenny (Steve) Sichterman of Hot Springs, Ark; 12 grandchildren, Matt Armstrong, Dawna (Mike) Novack, Angela Armstrong, Nicholas Armstrong, Anthony Armstrong, Timothy Armstrong, April Rogers, Jacob Armstrong, Eli Venables, Ben (Becca) Venables, Tyler Venables, and Steven Sichterman; 4 great grandchildren, Lucas Novack, Savanna Armstrong, Daniella Venables, and Bailey Venables; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters, Irene (Erwin) Gross, Esther Harris, Lucille Schanno, and Edith Winters; and 1 brother, Harold Armstrong.
