Obituary

Cecil Houck, age 85, formerly of Wolsey, SD, died Friday morning, May 14, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 18, at the Broadland Methodist Church with Pastor Jan Price and Pastor Dan Bader officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. (Everyone is invited to Riverview United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Huron for lunch and fellowship following the graveside service at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.) Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening or Tuesday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Tuesday afternoon. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:30 PM Monday evening at the Welter Funeral Home. Cecil Houck was born on April 5, 1919, to Fred and Mary (Rawstern) Houck near Broadland, SD. Her grew up in that area and went to school in Broadland. He entered into farming with his father in Broadland and Heartland townships. On April 5, 1939, Cecil married Jessie Marshall in Huron. He farmed all his life in the Broadland area; moving into Wolsey in June 1989 after an automobile accident. He continued to watch over the farm even after moving to town. Cecil enjoyed having friends, neighbors, family, and especially his grandchildren stop by to visit him. He also enjoyed going to dances with his friends. Cecil served as an officer of the Sunny Side Local Farmers Union for many years, he was on the Heartland Township board for many years, a member of the United Methodist Church in Broadland and served on the Church board for several years. He is survived by two sons, Bill (Mary) Houck, and Donald (Lois) Houck, all of Wolsey; two daughters, Marilyn (Dennis) Eggleston of Wessington, and Julie (Lynn) Bartells of Wolsey; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy and Walter Bob Mueller of Wolsey; one brother, Alvin (Opal) Houck of Huron; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie, in 1991; a son, Ervin, in 1977; two brothers, Elmer and Ivan; and his parents.
