Carl Gulbraa, age 92, of Huron, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023 at Avantara Huron. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at 11am at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial following at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Carl Keith Gulbraa was born on July 5, 1930 in Watertown, SD to parents John and Mable (Ronning) Gulbraa. Mable passed away and John married Anna Winge who raised Carl as her own. He attended country school near Wallace, SD where the family lived on a farm. Carl farmed until joining the United States Navy on September 19, 1951 and served on the USS Rushmore mainly around Greenland. He was honorably discharged on September 14, 1955.

Carl married Mariel Edwards on May 23, 1959 in Huron. He started his career with Armour and Company in 1955, retiring from Swift and Dakota Pork on March 1, 1993.

Carl was a member of American Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He and Mariel were active in the church, serving as ushers on Sunday mornings. Most summers, Carl and Mariel enjoyed camping and fishing all around the area. He enjoyed listening to country music, being outdoors, gardening and woodworking, with Mariel painting many of his workshop creations that won many blue ribbons at the State Fair.

Carl is survived by his children, Shari (Jeff) Duffy and Rance Gulbraa (Brenda Houge), all of Huron; grandson, Jarren (Katelyn) Duffy of Vermillion SD; his brother, Kenneth (Shirley) Gulbraa of Elk River, MN, sisters Erlis (Joe) Lauen of Big Lake, MN, and Janice Johnson and Mary Keller, both of Wallace, SD; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Tarbox of Huron, Delores Boetel of Cavour, Ardell Gulbraa of Federal Way WA, and Alma Gulbraa of White Bear Lake MN; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mariel in October 2020; six brothers and one sister.
