Buell Mathias Slepikas, age 85, of Huron, SD, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at St. Martin Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Buell Mathias Slepikas, son of Lawrence and Edith (Bialas) Slepikas, was born on March 25, 1927, in Huron, SD. He grew up on the family farmstead northeast of Huron, attended country school during his elementary years and graduated from Huron High School in 1945. He farmed with his father for the next several years. On August 20, 1952, Buell married Marlene Vensand at St. Martin Catholic Church in Huron. They lived on the family farm which they operated, later on in partnership with his brother, Leroy. In 1956, Buell was the first in Beadle County to irrigate his farmland, and in 1959, he was the first in the county with a center pivot irrigation system. In the early 1960's he won a corn irrigating contest which was sponsored by DeKalb. He retired from farming in 1992. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish; clerk on the Iowa Township Board for many years; Knights of Columbus; and the square dance camping club. His many interests included hunting, fishing, camping, bowling, and Bingo. Just prior to their retirement, Buell and Marlene began wintering in Apache Junction, AZ. He is survived by his wife, Marlene of Huron; 4 children, Denis (Diana) Slepikas of Huron, Denice (John) Hinkley of Cavour, Craig (Melynda) Slepikas of Huron, and Lori (Tony) Beyer of Watertown; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Leroy (Rose) Slepikas of Huron; many nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents.
