Bruce Horn, age 67, of 541 Ohio Ave. NW, Huron, SD, died Sunday, September 20, 2009, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 24, at American Lutheran Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery and Military Rites by the South Dakota Army National Guard.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Bruce Erwin Levi Horn, son of Erwin and Lula Mae (Schubert) Horn, was born on June 11, 1942, in Alpena, SD. His family was living in Virgil, SD, at the time of his birth, and he attended schools in Virgil until the late 1950s when his family moved to Huron. Bruce graduated from Huron High School in 1961.
He enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard on June 20, 1960, and served on active duty for 42 years. He was honorably discharged as a MSgt on June 23, 2002.
During his latter high school years he worked as a bell-hop at the Marvin Hughitt Hotel; for the South Dakota Federal Property Agency in 1963; and as a school bus driver for Huron School District activities from January 1998 August 2009.
He was a member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7 of Huron for 29 years; a member of Kiwanis in the 1970s and Kiwanis past-president 1977-1978. In the 1980s Bruce participated in silhouette competitive shooting from which he won several state championships and also held a national shooting record. He also was an avid hunter, fisherman, and an over-all outdoorsman.
He is survived by 3 children, Michelle (Robert) Eldridge of Bristow, VA, Jeff (Christa) Horn of Wolsey, SD, and Amber (Wayne) Langbehn of Worthing, SD; 6 grandchildren, Tyler Horn, Tanner Horn, Taylor Horn, Brendan Langbehn, Jase Langbehn, and Rylan Langbehn; 5 brothers and 1 sister, Daniel Horn of Huron, Roland Horn of Albany, OR, Lowrance (Diane) Horn of Gillette, WY, Pearl (Kenny) Klages of Miller, SD, Joel (Theresa) Horn of Huron, and Francis (Vicki) Horn of Douglas, WY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Horn.
