Obituary

Bob Timm, age 73, of Huron, SD, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a scripture service at 6:30 p.m.; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Bob Timm, son of Helene (Beck) and Robert Lee Timm, was born on February 10, 1939, in Huron, SD. He attended Huron schools, graduating from Huron High School in 1957. While in high school, Bob excelled at football, basketball and was selected to All State Chorus. His football prowess gained him a scholarship to play for Huron College. At Huron College, Bob was selected an All-SDIC defensive end. He also was named to the all-decade team at defensive end from 1950-1960. He was a member of 4 straight SDIC championship football teams. He later was honored by being inducted into the Huron University Hall of Fame as well as the SDIC Hall of Fame. Bob graduated from Huron College in 1961 with a teaching degree. Following graduation, he began his career in Wessington Springs, SD. On March 31, 1962, Bob married Elizabeth "Betty" Newton at Highmore, SD. He then taught and coached at Elk Point and Kadoka, SD, and completed his career in Huron, SD. Bob retired in 2001 after nearly 40 years of coaching and teaching, 34 with the Huron School District where he taught all levels from elementary to high school. At Huron, he was an assistant and head football coach, leading the Tigers to an ESD Title in 1969. Bob also had tremendous success with Huron shot putters, coaching numerous state champions. Bob was very proud of his officiating career. For more than 40 years, he refereed varsity and lower level games all over South Dakota. He worked several state tournaments. Some of his other accomplishments included being named Huron Educator of the Year by Huron University; the South Dakota Coach's Association Assistant Track and Field Coach of the Year; and the ESD Award of Merit. Coach Timm was a mentor, coach and friend to literally thousands of young men and women, helping to profoundly shape their lives. Many of his former students to this day, credit Coach Timm for instilling in them a positive work ethic, a sense of humor and a winning attitude. His interests included pheasant hunting with his friends, family and his favorite black lab Sheba; and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a proud member of the Huron Sertoma and Tailgate Coffee Clubs. Bob is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Betty"; his mother, Helene Van Buskirk Timm; 2 sons, Rob (Melanie) Timm of Huron, SD, and Patrick (Jennifer) Timm of Aberdeen, SD; 1 daughter, Shelly (Bill) Van Wyhe of Huron, SD; 6 grandchildren, Tyler Van Wyhe and Annie Van Wyhe; Cooper Timm and Samantha Timm; and Grayden Timm and Andie Timm. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Timm; step fathers, George Doering and Ralph Van Buskirk; 2 brothers Floyd Timm and Kenny Timm; and 1 sister in-law, Mildred Timm.
