Betty Donnabelle Hartzell, age 87, of Huron, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, at First United Methodist Church with burial at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Swedona Covenant Cemetery, rural Brandon, SD. Visitation with family present will be Friday, May 2, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Betty Hartzell was born Betty Donnabelle Rupp, daughter of Daniel and Dora (Reppert) Rupp, on August 5, 1926, in Garretson, SD. She grew up on a farm 10 miles northeast of Sioux Falls. Donna attended rural school near the family farm for 8 years and graduated from Brandon High School in 1944. On February 3, 1946, Donna married George F. Hartzell, Jr., in Sioux Falls. The couple resided in Sioux Falls for 11 years until 1957 when the family moved to Los Angeles, CA, where she was employed by Douglas Aircraft, and also Stillman Rubber Company. In 1963 they returned to South Dakota and made their home in Rapid City for 33 years, where Donna was employed at Black Hills Power and Light Company for 23 years, and also in various other positions until her retirement in 1986. Her husband, George died on December 21, 1987. In 1996 Donna moved to Huron to be near her family. Her memberships included First Methodist Church, Funsteppers Dance Club, and the VFW Auxiliary Post. For 36 years Donna was a member of the Sioux Falls, Los Angeles, and Rapid City Bowling Associations attending 5 national bowling tournaments and winning 2 state championships. In addition to bowling her many interests included traveling, playing cards, bead work, and Western dancing. Donna always said that her great love for dancing had kept her "young at heart". Donna was a resident of Violet Tschetter Memorial Home for exactly one month prior to her death. She is survived by 2 daughters, Mary Kay (Lennie) Dismounts of Huron, and Lana (Allen) Willey of Spearfish; 7 grandchildren, Wayne (Janet) Miller, David (Karyl) Miller, Kristy (Bill) Smith, Kevin (Lori) Willey, Randy (Kenna) Willey, Daniel Dismounts, and Sarah Dismounts; 7 great grandchildren with one more great grandchild arriving very soon; several nieces and nephews. Donna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George on December 21, 1987; 4 sisters; 2 brothers; and 1 grandchild.
