Obituary

Beth Potter, age 96, of Miller, SD, formerly of Wessington, SD, died Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller. Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Welter Funeral Home with burial at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wessington Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service. Beth Potter was born Ruth Elizabeth Rogers, daughter of Chauncey and Sedsel (Peterson) Rogers, on July 21, 1917, on the Rogers homestead southwest of Wessington, SD. (The farm is still in the family and Dick and Judy Rogers live there.) She was the youngest of 11 children. Beth attended elementary school at Rogers Country School and graduated from Wessington High School in 1935. She attended Wessington Springs College for 2 years and majored in education. On June 30, 1936, Beth married Paul Potter. They lived in various cities where Paul was employed at various college campuses as manager of the cafeteria, including Wessington Springs College, Seattle Pacific College, Pasadena College, Los Angeles Pacific College, and Azusa Pacific College in Los Angeles. Beth also took college classes during those years. The couple divorced in 1972. Beth lived on the west coast until 1984 when she moved back to Wessington. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wessington where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school; Wessington Senior Center; and Wessington Commercial Club. She became a resident of Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller in May 2009. Beth was always interested in school and sports activities wherever she lived. She is survived by 2 daughters, Pauline (Mike) Lynn of Northport, AL, and Mary Ann (Tom) Ashworth of Welch, OK; 9 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 19 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 daughter, Betty Leech; 1 son-in-law, Hal Leech; 3 brothers, Fred Rogers, Byron Rogers, and Irving Rogers; 7 sisters, Edith King, Ann Huddleston, Mildred Russell, Helen Wade, Eva Titus, Margaret Larson, and Louise Jenson; grandson, Robert Salcedo.
