Obituary

Bertha M. Sweeney, age 95, of 1345 Michigan Ave SW, Huron, and formerly of Iroquois, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral mass will be at 10:30 AM Monday, April 3, at St. Pauls Catholic Church at Iroquois with Rev. Cathal Gallagher officiating. Burial will be at St. Pauls Cemetery at Iroquois. Friends may call Sunday afternoon until 4:30 PM at the Welter Funeral Home or from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday evening at St. Pauls Catholic Church or prior to the mass at the church Monday morning. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:30 PM Sunday evening at the church. Bertha Sweeney was born Bertha Marie Whites on March 23, 1911, to Owen and Eliza (Ellison) Whites near Osceola, SD. She graduated from the eighth grade at the Sargent School in rural Iroquois. On May 22, 1935, Bertha married John Sweeney at Cavour, SD. They lived on a farm near Yale, SD, for 38 years. After their retirement in 1973 they moved to Iroquois. Bertha was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church at Iroquois for 65 years. She was an active member of the Altar Society and served as its President in 1948, and also taught catechism for many years. She also belonged to the Humming Bee Extension Club when she lived on the farm, was a member of the Iroquois card club, and worked on various PTA boards at the Yale Public School in the 1940s and 1950s. Bertha loved sports and was a member of the Iroquois softball team when she was young, and later was an active league bowler for many years in Huron. She loved to entertain and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Her other interests included fishing, gardening, traveling, playing cards, and board games. She is survived by 1 daughter, Marilyn Hayes of Bloomington, MN; 1 brother, Marvin Whites of Iroquois; 3 sisters-in-law, Helen Whites of Dixon, IL, Ruth Whites of Randolph, NE, and June Whites of Aberdeen, SD; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son-in-law, John Jack Hayes; 7 brothers, Marion, Reese, Bruce, Hugh, Eldon, Harrold, and Gene; 1 sister, Ruth Noe; 1 brother-in-law, Roy Noe; and 5 sisters-in-law, Evelyn Whites, Clare Whites, Burdette Whites, Dorothy Whites, and Hope Whites.
