Berniece M. Wahlert, age 87, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at Avantara-Huron in Huron, South Dakota. Her funeral service will be at 4 PM on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with a private family burial at the Wolsey Cemetery in Wolsey, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Berniece Mildred Thompson was born on March 7, 1934 to parents William and Irene (King) Thompson in Miller, South Dakota. She grew up on the family farm with many brothers and sisters, attending country school on horseback.

Berniece married Keith Wahlert in Gann Valley, SD on November 9, 1957. They raised their family in Huron where Berniece was a devoted mother and homemaker. She enjoyed baking breads, fried donuts, and pies. Making fruit cakes for her siblings was a yearly tradition for her. She liked to collect many knick-knacks such as porcelain dolls, salt and pepper shakers and kerosene lanterns. She also liked to go to rummage sales.

Berniece is survived by her children; Nancy (Mark) Rosenberg of Watertown, Brenda (Roger) Purintun of Huron, Randy Wahlert of Mitchell, Rhonda (Tom Barutt) Wahlert of Cavour, Bradley Wahlert of Yankton, Twila (Randy) Loyd of Yankton, and Brian Wahlert of Huron; 10 grandchildren, Lori, Curtis, Nicholas, Tiffany, Jacob, Dustin, Jessica, Joshua, Jason and Holly; 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter; two sisters, Norma Yost of Miller and Patty Keckler of Eagle Butte; brother-in-law, Lawrence Bonebrake of Huron and Keith's siblings, Imogene Volz of Rapid City and Gary Wahlert of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1996; sisters, Reva (Arthur) Gross, Bessie (Ted) Reimer, Verna (William) Reimer, Thelma (Bert) Parker, Juletta Bonebrake; brothers, Richard Thompson, Lester Thompson and Russell (Diane) Thompson; and brothers-in-law, Edwin Yost and Jack Keckler.
