Obituary

Bernadine L. Hanley, age 91, of Huron, passed away Friday, June 21, 2019 at Huron Regional Medical Center. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with interment at Broadland Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Friday, June 28 th at the Welter Funeral Home with a rosary service beginning at 6:30 pm; or visitation, one hour prior at the funeral mass at the church.

Bernadine (Simon) Hanley was born in Hoven, SD March 1, 1928 to Edward and Mary (Wickert) Simon where she attended the West Carr School and St. Anthony's Parochial School. She graduated Hoven High School and enrolled at Northern State University. She was employed at Rader Ins. Agency of Hoven when she met Don Hanley of Huron while he was engineering the water project there, employed by Scott Engineering of Watertown. They were married in the Cathedral of the Prairie at Hoven August 30 th 1950. They lived in Watertown one year and moved to Huron. In 1952 they purchased the Hanley Homestead at Broadland, SD where they farmed and ranched until 1980 when they retired to Huron, SD.

Bernadine (Bernie) was a devoted wife and mother. She sang her way through life beginning as a child at school events, high school chorus and solos, St. Martins Choir, Legion Auxiliary chorus, Huron Community chorus and in the Heartland Tonnettes until she was 80. She enjoyed assisting and attending the 4H events of their three sons. Her favorite hobbies were hosting coffee parties, doing cross-stitch, crewel, and embroidery. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, little parish number #8, a 4H leader, and RSVP. She was a past member of the Legion Auxiliary and was a 22-year volunteer at the St. Francis shop. After they retired, they traveled extensively, and also cared for their elderly relatives. Don passed away on December 17, 2009.

Grateful for having shared in Bernadine's life are her three sons James (Kathy) Hanley of Rapid City, SD, Michael (Mary) Hanley of Cave Creek, AZ, and Stephen (Brenda) Hanley of Wentworth, SD; seven grandchildren Laura, Matt, Molly, Michael, Kandice, Mark, Marissa, nine great grandchildren, and one brother, Melvin (Fran) Simon of Schenectady, NY.
