Basil Berquist, age 93, of 420 21st St. SW, Huron, died Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 22, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Dan Domke officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation will be Wednesday 1-8 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Basil Albert Berquist was born on January 12, 1915, to Albert and Edith (Wold) Berquist in Vegreville, Alberta, Canada. He lived there until the age of 2 years when he moved with his parents to Ree Heights, SD. The family lived there for 3 years when they moved to Huron where Basil attended elementary school and high school. On June 23, 1940, Basil married Marie Schroeder in Huron, where the couple has made Huron their home to the present. Basil worked for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) for 1 years prior to entering the U.S. Army on March 4, 1943. He served overseas in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theaters during World War II. He was honorably discharged on March 26, 1946. Upon returning to Huron, Basil began a 44-year career with the Beadle County Highway Department, retiring as a foreman. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776 of Huron, and a 30-year member of the AFL (American Federation of Labor). He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and reading. He is survived by his wife, Marie of Huron; 1 daughter, Karen Johnston of Council Bluffs, IA; 2 grandchildren, Tina Hofwalt, and Jason Johnston; 3 great grandchildren, Allan Hofwalt, Dylan Hofwalt, and Sean Hofwalt; 1 sister, Evelyn Zell of Huron; 1 sister-in-law, Marjorie Berquist of Huron; 1 brother-in-law, Darrel Adams of Aurora, CO; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 sister, Ethelyn Adams; 1 brother, Delbert Berquist; and 1 brother-in-law, Ben Zell.
