Obituary

Barbara Marko, age 56, of 375 Dakota Ave. S., Huron, and formerly of Cavour, died Monday, June 20, 2005, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Cathal Gallagher officiating. Burial will be at St. Patricks Cemetery, rural Cavour. Friends may call this Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the mass at the church Thursday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Barbara Marko was born Barbara Elaine Gillies on February 17, 1949, to Reginald and Ethel (Adolph) Gillies at Watertown, SD. She grew up southwest of Clark, SD, in Darlington Township where she attended country school, then attended and graduated from Clark High School in 1967. She babysat for area families during her high school years and after her graduation. Barbara was Deputy Clerk of Courts at the Clark County Courthouse from 1967-1972. On October 28, 1972, Barbara married Dennis Marko at Clark, SD. The couple lived south of Cavour, SD, in Pearl Creek Township from 1972-1999. For several years she was a cook at the Senior Citizens Center at Cavour and also was a housekeeper at the Catholic Church rectory. In early 1999, they moved to the Dakota Plaza at Huron. Her husband, Dennis, died on May 10, 1999. She was a past member of St. Patricks Catholic Church at Cavour and the church ladies group, present member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish at Huron, and the Country Neighbors Extension Club since 1972. Her many interests included her love of children, cooking, car races, basketball games, playing cards and games, country music and old-time rock n roll, embroidery, and search-and-word puzzles. Barbara loved people of all ages, especially children, and loved to laugh and make others laugh. She loved cats and on the farm her stairway steps were lined with them and each had a name. Wherever Barb would go her cats would follow. She preferred to wear slacks as she disliked dresses and even requested that she be buried in slacks. Barb always claimed that her faith, family, friends, and good health were her riches treasures. She felt blessed when she and Dennis moved to the Dakota Plaza as it was such a nice place to live where she met so many wonderful people. She is survived by 2 sisters, Shirley Dreher of Clark, SD, and Beverly (Robert) Brush of Harrisburg, SD; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Mildred Haffner of Huron. In addition to her husband, Dennis, she was preceded in death by her parents; 1 sister, Maxine Dreher; 2 brothers-in-law, Lloyd Dreher, and Carl Dreher; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
