Barb Cook, age 63, of Huron, SD, died on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Sanford (USD) Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, due to complications from meningitis. Her memorial service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Huron with private entombment at Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum prior to the service. Memorial visitation with family present will be from 6-8 pm Monday, June 10, 2013, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the service. Barb's family prefers memorials be given to a charity of the givers choice in Barb's name. Barbara Jo Knecht was born on August 2, 1949, in Rapid City, SD, to John Robert and Doris (Hyenga) Knecht. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1967. Barb began her career as a Paralegal in Rapid City at the law firm of Costello, Porter, Hill, Heisterkamp, Bushnell, and Carpenter before moving to Huron and working for Fosheim, Haberstick & Hutchinson Law Office. Barb went back to school and graduated for the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, minor in Mathematics in 1990. That same year she married Sid Cook. Sid passed away suddenly in 2001. From 1991 to the present, Barb was the Executive Director of the Huron Housing Authority. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Huron Country Club, Broadland Creek National Golf Course, Greater Huron Development, P.E.O., Huron Chamber Ambassadors, Huron Regional Medical Center Foundation, and the National President of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO). Barb enjoyed golfing, shopping, traveling, baking, and loved spending time with her friends. Barb is survived by her parents, J. Robert and Doris Knecht of Rochester, MN, formerly of Rapid City); two children, Michael (Delilah) Greve of St. Peter, MN, and Jenifer "Swanson" (Mark) Dexter of Hopkinton, New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Elizabeth "Lizi Jo" Dexter, Kody Dexter, and Brandt Mae Greve; brother, David (Judy) Knecht of Zumbro Falls, MN; sister-in-law, Connie "Cook" (Chuck) Rowen of Huron; special friend, Rick Antle of Huron; and several nieces and nephews. Barb was preceded in death by her brother, Mark Knecht in 1996; and her husband, Sid Cook in 2001.
