Autumn Kerr Thomas, age 81, of Huron, SD, died Monday, December 9, 2013, in Huron. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 12, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Lake Preston Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Wednesday, December 11, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Autumn Elaine Merrick, daughter of John and Hilda (Treml) Merrick, was born on October 13, 1932, in Huron, SD. At the time of her birth the family was living on a farm near Cavour and Autumn moved with her family over the next several years to live in Yale for grades 1-4; Hamlin County grades 5-8; and graduated from Lake Preston High school in 1950. On February 28, 1952, Autumn married Dale Kerr. The couple farmed near Lake Preston and to this union 4 children were born, Carolyn, Janice, Raymond, and Kathy. Autumn loved the farm life and, in addition to her household duties, she could be found working in the fields alongside of her husband. Autumn and Dale instilled a love for horses into their children and had many happy memories taking them to horse shows and competing in 4-H events. Dale died on August 30, 1979. She was a past member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church of De Smet and Altar Society; present member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish; 4-H leader; VFW Forrest McMullen Post #1776 Auxiliary; Huron Area Senior Center; and SD Duplicate Bridge. On August 13, 1983, Autumn married Herbert Thomas in Huron. The couple moved to Huron. Herbert died on October 23, 2009. Autumn's children and grandchildren were the most important in her life and she followed all of their activities. Her many interests included playing cards and she was a Life Master Duplicate Bridge player along with her husband; and playing dominos, and Bingo. She is survived by 4 children, Carolyn (Larry) Ames of Huron, Janice (Kendal) Thompson of Everly, IA, Raymond Kerr of Lake Preston, SD, and Kathy (Jason) Roseland of Marshalltown, IA; 2 step-children, James Thomas of Huron, and Susan Hawkins of Belle Fourche, SD; 12 grandchildren, Dale Ames(Rachel Marshall), Rachel Ames, Barb (Mark) Ransom, Robert (Tina) Ames, Jessica (Jake) Weikert, Daniel Thompson, Jared Thompson, Kayla Kerr, McKenzie (Ty) Standley, Karsey Roseland, Taylor Roseland (Cody) Fevold, and Talon Roseland; 14 great grandchildren; 3 siblings, Yvonne (Ed) Shell of Hill City, William (Sandy) Merrick of Sioux Falls, and Roxana (Keith) Hermsen of Winner; 3 sisters-in-law, Janice Merrick of Arlington, SD, Dr. Julie (William) Thomas of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Marilyn Ellingson of Thornton, CO. Autumn was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands, Dale and Herbert; and 1 brother, John Merrick.
