Audrey Thomas, age 95, of Huron, SD, died on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at St. Martin Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Friday, May 23, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a scripture and rosary service at 7:00 p.m.; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Audrey Thomas was born Audrey Catherine Ford, daughter of John "Bennie" and Lucy (Newcome) Ford, on September 5, 1918, on the family farm just north of Yale, SD. She attended elementary school in Yale and graduated from Yale High School in 1936. She attended and received her teaching certificate from Notre Dame Teachers College in Mitchell in 1937. Audrey taught in country schools for the next 7 years. On June 17, 1942, Audrey married James Henry Thomas at St. Patrick's Rectory in Cavour, SD. The couple made their home in rural Cavour where they owned and operated a dairy business. They also raised Appaloosa horses and showed cattle at the South Dakota State Fair for over 40 years. Jim and Audrey wintered in Mission, TX, for several years in the 1990's. They moved to Huron in 1991. Her husband, Jim, died on July 1, 1999. In 2012 Audrey moved into SunQuest Village, and in February 2014 she became a resident of SunQuest Healthcare Center. Audrey was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish; Beadle Bums-Sam Camping Club; member and past officer of Extension Homemakers; member and past 4-H leader. She enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, and flowers. Throughout her life she maintained a strong resolve in her faith and in God. She is survived by her 7 children, Claire (Bev) Thomas of Huron, Bob (Becky) Thomas of Huron, Danny (Cindy) Thomas of Tulare, Pam (Scott) Winegar of Huron, Janey (Pat) Cronin of Huron, Betty Thomas of Huron, and Jay Thomas and friend Beth of Huron; 27 grandchildren, Gary (Heather) Beck, Todd (Marsha) Thomas, Tony (Angie) Thomas, Chad (Tara) Thomas, Tim (Brooke) Thomas, Chris Thomas, Lisa (Corey) Baruth, Taunya (Shawn) Martin, Jim (Kristi) Winegar, Joshua Thomas, Danielle (Ed) Mack, Nicklaus (Laura) Thomas, Micah Thomas, Kyle Cronin, Jesse Thomas, Jennifer (Matt) Martens, Jim (Elise) Cronin, Erin (Justus) Bass, Beth (Travis) Kohnen, Chris (Sandra) Harford, Adam (Amber) Harford, Nathan (Amber) Harford, David Harford, Tim Harford, Christina (Jack) Brooks, Cheyenne Mooney, and John Mooney; 50 great grandchildren; 5 sisters-in-law, Dolores Ford of Huron, Mary Thomas of Huron, Ann Thomas of Storm Lake, IA, Elsie Thomas of Springfield, OR, and Ruth Single of Huron; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; daughter-in-law, Connie Thomas; 3 brothers, Don Ford, Joe (Esther) Ford, and infant Claire Ford.
