Obituary

Arthur Goehner, age 86, of 430 Mellette Ave SW, Huron, died Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the Sanford USD Medical Center at Sioux Falls. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 12th at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Brian Grover officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be this Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 to 8:00 PM at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM or one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday afternoon. Arthur Goehner was born on November 18, 1921, to Fred W. and Olga (Rath) Goehner on a farm near Kulm, North Dakota. He attended grade school in the Kulm, ND area and after grade school he helped his father on the farm. On September 22, 1940, Art married Martha Miller at a country church near Kulm, ND. In 1955, Art attended Barber College and then moved to Huron where he apprenticed under Ed Ulrich for two years. He purchased the barber shop from Ed Ulrich and changed the name to Arts Barber Shop. In 1960, with the addition of his son Ken, he changed the name to A & K Barber Shop where he has worked until the present time and at the nursing homes. In 1983, Wes joined Ken and Art at A & K Barber Shop. He was very active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and served on various church boards. He was a member of the Huron Noon Lions, AARP, RSVP volunteer, Silvertones, and the South Dakota Barbers Association. Art was an avid woodworker and he made special family gifts. He enjoyed bowling, baseball and later played with the A & K Barbers slow pitch softball team; this was one of the first teams in the state. He is survived by his wife Martha of Huron; two sons, Ken (Kay) Goehner and Wes (Shari) Goehner both of Huron; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and two brothers, Larry (Eileen) Goehner of Spokane, WA and Bill Goehner of Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Shirley Ann, one daughter-in-law, Karon, one granddaughter, Rachel, and one sister-in-law, Flo. The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Congregational United Church of Christ or charity of their choice.
