Obituary

Arthur Art Erickson, age 82, formerly of 2017 Ohio Ave SW, Huron, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 26, at the American Lutheran Church in Huron with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Ideal Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening with the family present from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday afternoon. The family will be gathering at the Rick Erickson residence at 778 Idaho Ave SE, Huron. Arthur Erickson was born on December 10, 1922, to Martin and Anne (Bjerkeset) Erickson at Huron. He was baptized and confirmed at American Lutheran Church in Huron and he attended school at Huron. Art was employed at a number of jobs in the Huron area and also the Conservation Corp Camp until enlisting in the United States Navy on January 27, 1943, where he served in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged on January 8, 1946. On December 5, 1946, Art married Gladys Dietz at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. He began his employment with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1947 as a switchman and after 39 years with the railroad he retired in 1986. After his retirement they continued to live in Huron and in March of 2003, Art became a resident of the Huron Nursing Home. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church, William Reaves American Legion Post #7, Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, and the United Transportation Union. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, horse shoes, playing pool and enjoyed outings with his family. He also enjoyed mechanics and home remodel and repair. Art was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need. He is survived by his wife Gladys of Huron; his children, Carol (Gus) Erickson of Aberdeen, Sandra (Ken) Erickson of Mountain City, TN, Rick (Joette) Erickson of Huron, Vickie Brodkorb of Wessington Springs, and Julie Erickson of Belle Fourche; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Zwanziger of Huron and Esther Bothwell of Temecula, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Edward and Andrew, two sisters, Gladys Rudloff and Mary Cheley, and one son-in-law, Mark Brodkorb.
