Obituary

Arthur H. Art Eggers, age 89, of 1860 Iowa Ave SE, Huron, died Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 27th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin Cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the Mass Saturday morning at the church. There will be a Rosary at 7:30 PM Friday evening at the funeral home with the family present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Arthur H. Eggers was born on March 4, 1916, to Henry and Carolina (Heymeyer) Eggers on a farm in Corsica, Douglas County, South Dakota. He graduated from Corsica High School in 1934 and from Mitchell Business College in 1936. On May 31, 1937, Art married Lillian R. Thompson at Mitchell. A self-taught trombonist, Mr. Eggers was a member of the National Guard 147th Field Artillery Band in Mitchell, SD, from 1934-36. On May 4, l944, he enlisted in the United States Navy as a Radioman and served in the Pacific Theater with duty in Guam, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was discharged on January 5, 1946. Mr. Eggers was employed by the Aurora County Agriculture Adjustment Administration, Plankinton, SD, from 1936 to 1940. In 1940 he transferred to the Gregory County AAA, Burke, SD, and remained there until 1942. In 1942 he transferred to the state office of Production Marketing Administration in Huron. After his navy service he returned to PMA for the year l946-47. From 1947-49 he was owner/operator of a Gambles store in Ruthvan, Iowa, and in 1959, after another brief stint with the PMA, he joined the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation and served as District Supervisor and State Director until 1968. From 1968-1971 he was the Assistant Director of the Program and Research Division of the FCIC in Washington, D.C. and then retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. For the two years following his retirement (l971-73) he was a right-of-way purchasing agent for the South Dakota State Highway Department after which he was a salesman and broker for the Montgomery Real Estate Agency (1973-80). He was Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Huron Noon Lions Club, and the American Legion, the latter of which he was a past commander at Ruthvan, Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Lillian, of Huron; two sons David A. Eggers of Pleasanton, California, and Carter J. Eggers of Ypsilanti, Michigan; two grandsons, Patrick and Paul; two granddaughters, Kristen and Leslie; and two great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Edward, and William; and a sister, Ella Herron. He was deeply loved by his family and friends and will always be remembered. Casket bearers will be David Eggers, Carter Eggers, Paul Eggers, Patrick Eggers, Leslie Fleckenstein, Herb Rohrer and Donald Dehne.
