Arlene E. Van Scharrel, 93, Huron, SD passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
Her funeral service will be at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron with interment at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Monday, April 3, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, followed by a Prayer Service at 7 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
A memorial has been established to Main Street Living.
Arlene E. Van Scharrel was born on March 22, 1924 to Herman F. and Emma (Siebrandt) Hellwinckel on the family farm south of Edgerton, Minnesota. She was baptized on April 6, 1924 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Edgerton. She was confirmed on April 17, 1938 at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Trosky, MN. She attended school in Edgerton where she graduated in 1942. She later moved to Pipestone, MN with her mother and was working retail in the Ben Franklin store when she caught the eye of a WWII vet who was a student at SDSU and home visiting his parents near Pipestone.
Arlene married George H. Van Scharrel in Pipestone, MN on May 29th 1949. They spent their first year of married life in Brookings, SD where George was finishing his last year of college. Upon graduation, they moved out to Belle Fourche, SD for a job. In 1951 they moved to Huron, SD where George got a job working in the state A.S.C.S. office.
Arlene was a homemaker from then on and an active member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for 40 years and was active in the LWML and quilting for Lutheran World Relief. Arlene enjoyed many musical events through the years in Huron with George. She loved to travel and planned many vacations with her family. She also liked to go fishing with family and friends. She especially enjoyed the years when she was blessed with 10 grandchildren and spending time with them.
Arlene went to be with her Lord Wednesday night March 29, 2017 at SunQuest Health Care Center in Huron, SD.
She is survived by two daughters, Gloria (Robert) Kilpatrick of Morganton, NC and Ruth (Kirby) Bakken of Byron, MN; two sons, Mark (Julie Ryan)Van Scharrel of Woodridge, IL and David (Paula) Van Scharrel of Hitchcock, SD; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandsons; five great-granddaughters; two sisters, Caroline Kohrs of Lake City, MN and Erma Esch of Caledonia, MN; three sisters-in-law, Wilma Friedlund of Bloomington, MN, Gerda Koopman of Litchfield, MN and Greta McDaniel of Pipestone, MN; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; one brother, Melvin Hellwinckel; two brothers-in-law; Reynold Kohrs and Kenneth Esch; and 1 sister-in-law, Olga Hellwinckel.
