Obituary

Arlene E. Scheel, age 98, of Stoneybrook Suites in Huron, South Dakota, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at Avera Weskota Manor in Wessington Springs, South Dakota. Her funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Monday, February 24, 2020 at American Lutheran Church in Huron, South Dakota with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 am to the time of service Monday at the church.

Arlene E. (Erickson) Scheel was born on December 10, 1921 to Karl and Susanna (Welter) Erickson of rural Lane, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Solberg Lutheran Church, south of Lane. She attended Lane Consolidated School graduating in 1939. After a short business course, she was employed at the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) office.

She married Lester W. Scheel on November 16, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church in Lane, South Dakota. They farmed north of Lane until they retired and moved to Huron in 1971. Active in the American Lutheran Church and the women's organization, she and Lester managed the Lutheran Dining Hall at the State Fairgrounds for several years. Also active in the YWCA, she led an exercise for music class for many years, receiving the Christian Leadership Award in 1991. She enjoyed membership in the Huron Garden Club and had volunteered at the Adult Day Care Services since 1996.

Arlene is survived by her son Dennis (Jean) Scheel of Wessington Springs and daughter Diane (Clark) Roeber of Redfield; seven grandchildren, Jim (Audra) Scheel, Wendy (Joey) Denison, Michelle (Jim) Bousheé, Mike Roeber, Kristie (Shawn) Engelmeyer, Ann Marie Scheel, and Jason Scheel; great-grandchildren, Carissa, Teagan, and Kaycee Scheel, Devin and Karly Denison, Gage Bousheé, Ava Roeber, Justin, Rowdy, and Lincoln Scheel; sisters-in-law, Doreen Erickson and Ardis Lillehaug.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lester in 2000, great-grandson Cole Bousheé, four brothers, Elmer and Albert in infancy, LaVerne Erickson, and Lloyd (Dorothy) Erickson, two sisters, Agnes (Ralph) Brandenberg, Ann (Nick) Rich, nephew David Erickson and niece Donna Walker, as well as many other relatives.
