Obituary

Please note time change for the funeral - 1:00 p.m. Saturday Amos Amundson, age 83, of 527 20th St. SW, Huron, SD, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. His memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at First Presbyterian Church. Burial of his cremated remains will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home Family Council or HRMC Hospice. Amos John Amundson was born on August 22, 1924, to Amund and Amanda (Estenson) Amundson in Brookings, SD. When he was 3 years old he moved with his family to Huron where he grew up and received his education. He entered the U.S. Army on April 7, 1943, during World War II, and served in the Europe-Africa-Middle Eastern Theater, and the Ardennes Campaign, Rhineland Campaign, and Central European Campaign with the 17th Airborne Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. As an Army paratrooper he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged as a TSgt on December 16, 1945. On January 13, 1946, Amos married Kathleen Carpenter at Jackson Springs, NC. They returned to Huron where they opened Dakota Alignment in 1949 and Motive Parts & Machine Company (NAPA Auto Parts Store) in 1959. He retired in 1975 and Amos and Kathleen spent winters in Pinehurst, NC, and Mesa, AZ. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church; Elks Lodge; William Reaves American Legion Post #7; Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776; and the Huron Country Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and was an avid golfer who had three holes-in-one. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Kathleen of Huron; his 3 daughters, Mary (Tom) Sandve of Huron, Valerie Amundson of Huron, and Lois (Mike) Hieb of Redwood Falls, MN; 5 grandchildren, Chamie (Tim) Delkeskamp, Jack (Rachel) Alexander, Kate Alexander and special friend James Seale, Karlie (Layton) Cooper, and Matt Sandve; 4 great grandchildren, Aidan Delkeskamp, Jude Delkeskamp, Hannah Delkeskamp, and Abby Cooper; 1 niece, Hope (Les) Birkle of Fresno, CA; and very special to the family: Mike, Clela, and Lane Henson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a half-sister, Hazel Allen and her husband Mart; and a half-brother, C.A. Carlson. Blessed be his memory.
