Alvin LeRoy Halbur, age 88, of Huron, SD, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2016 at Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket, SD.
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 30, 2016 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron with entombment in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, September 29, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Alvin LeRoy Halbur, the son of Frank and Clara (Ufken) Halbur, was born on July 7, 1928 in Broadland, SD. He attended Huron Public Schools.
Alvin married Esther Schroeder on June 7, 1953 in Huron, SD. The couple made their home in Huron and have lived here since that time.
Alvin worked as a dairy farmer for many years. In 1972 he started as a school bus driver. In 1979, Alvin began to drive bus for the Senior Center. He did that for two years. In 1982 He returned to the school district and worked as the transportation supervisor until his retirement in 1993.
Alvin loved farming and working outside. He enjoyed tinkering around the farm, mowing the lawn, and putting puzzles together with Esther. Alvin was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where he served as the Secretary of Finance, Elder, and Treasurer for the church. Alvin was also a board member for the Board of Eastern Milk Producers and the Beadle County Milk Producers.
Grateful for having shared in Alvin's life are his wife, Esther of Huron; three children: Tony Halbur of Huron, SD, Linda L. Stevens (Marcia Hagberg), of Las Vegas, NV, and John L. Halbur of Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren: James (Amber) Halbur, Kaitlin Halbur, Lowell J. (Elizabeth) Stevens, and Tracie (Tory Skime) Aasen; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter in infancy, Nancy; two brothers; Frank G. (Ethel) and Lester (Alice) Halbur; two sisters, Evelyn (Kenneth) Gifford and Marie (Orrin) Skinner; daughter-in-law, Jamie Halbur; two nephews, Leslie (Vickie) Halbur and Dennis Gifford; and niece, Audrey Peterson.
Memorials may be made in Alvin's name to The Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Preschool
