Alma L. Stevens, age 99, of 1345 Michigan Ave SW, and formerly of 617 Wisconsin Ave NW, Huron, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 10th at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial will be at St. Martin Cemetery. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the Mass at the church Saturday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 5:00 PM Friday afternoon at the funeral home with the family present from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Alma Stevens was born Alma Lucille Gorham on June 21, 1907, to Walter Guy and Mary Jane (Stewart) Gorham on a farm east of Mitchell in Hanson County near Bard, SD. The families roots were County Cork, Ireland. She lived near Mitchell until 1918 when she moved to a farm northeast of Huron. She attended school in Hanson County and Valley township county schools. She worked at Burg Department Store for 3 years prior to her marriage. On October 17, 1928, Alma married Wilfred Pat Stevens at St. Martins Catholic Church. They farmed northwest of Huron, having one good crop from 1928 until 1939 when they moved to Huron at 617 Wisconsin Ave NW where they celebrated their 76th anniversary in 2004. Alma worked 17 years at Montgomery Wards, 10 years at J.C. Penney, retiring in 1972 and seasonal work for the City Assessors office. She was a member of Hopefield Ladies Aid, past member of the AFL/CIO Labor Union, St. Martins Altar Society and member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Her interests were history, reading, fishing, dancing, card playing, knitting, travel and baking. She is survived by 1 daughter, Mary Trella of Rochester, MN; 7 grandchildren, Craig Stevens, Kerry (Marilyn) Stevens of Mahtomedi, MN, Sherry (Tom) Elliott of Everett, WA, Tim Stevens of Watertown, Brad Stevens of Milbank, Mark (Pearl) Stevens of Harris, MN and Alena Trella of Gainesville, FL; great and great great grandchildren; 1 sister, Agnes Gorham of Portland, OR; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Wilfred Pat Stevens on December 12, 2004, her son Howard (Addie) Stevens, one daughter Joyce (Larry) Trainor, her parents, an infant brother Arthur Gorham, 3 brothers, Carl, Albert Bob and Walter Jim Gorham, and 2 sisters, Alta Toot Conrad and Doris Bergerson.
