Alma Gross, age 92, of Huron, SD, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Bethesda Church in Huron with burial at Ideal Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, October 10, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Alma J. Waldner, the daughter of John and Mary (Decker) Waldner, was born on March 2, 1922 on a farm near Carpenter, SD. She attended grade school at Wheeler School, High School in Yale, SD, Teacher's College in Freeman, SD, and received her B.A. Degree from Huron College. Alma taught school for 43 years in Beadle County and in the Huron School System. Alma was joined in marriage to A. Jim Gross on December 6, 1941. Together they enjoyed married life for 55 years. God blessed their marriage with one son, Anthony (Tony) of Carpenter, SD. The couple lived and farmed near Carpenter for 43 years. They then moved to Huron and enjoyed city life. Alma loved to have coffee with her teacher friends and sisters almost every day. Alma became a resident of Stoney Brook Suites in October of 2009. In November 2012, she became a resident of Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Alma enjoyed traveling. Jim and Alma started traveling long distances in the 1950's. They would always have extra people in their car along with Tony. Alma was always so generous with her time for her grandkids and great-grandkids. Alma will be missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Sharlene Gross of Carpenter, SD; her 4 grandchildren: Teresa (Jeff) Decker of Huron, SD, Thomas (Shannon) Gross of Dickinson, ND, Sharla (Mark) Miller of Hurley, SD, and Shawna (Brent) Henrikson of Tea, SD; and 17 great-grandchildren. Alma will also be missed by her sisters: Bernice Kleinsasser, Pearl Hofer, Barbara and husband LeRoy Gross of Huron, SD, Viola and husband Mike Hofer of Bridgewater, SD, Naomi and husband Duane Gross, of Tulare, SD, Norman and wife Marge Waldner of Carpenter, SD, and Lucille Waldner of Loveland, CO. Also her in-laws: Julie Waldner of Sioux Falls, SD, Lola Waldner, of Yankton, SD, and Emma Waldner of Carpenter, SD; and many nieces and nephews. Alma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, A. Jim in 1994; 4 brothers: John E., Bennie, Willis, and Melroy; her sister, Kathryn Glanzer; 3 brothers-in-law: Paul Kleinsasser, Jerane Hofer, and Clarence Glanzer; and sister-in-law Josephine Waldner. Memorials may be made in Alma's name to the Byron Bible Camp of Huron.
