Allen J. Johnson, age 90, of De Smet formerly of Huron, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Healthcare Center in De Smet, SD.
His Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2010, at American Lutheran Church in Huron, with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
A Family Gathering will be Thursday, May 20, at the American Lutheran Church, in Huron, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., or one hour prior to the service at the church.
Allen J. Johnson was born on January 14, 1920, to John O. and Carrie (Kjoller) Johnson in Letcher, SD. He attended school at rural Storla. On December 3, 1939, Allen married Bernita G. Rearick in Letcher, SD. He worked for 3 years for WPA and was employed at the Montgomery Ward Store in Mitchell, SD. After the couple moved to Huron in 1943, Allen worked for Armour & Company for 5 years. In 1948, Allen went to work as a shipping manager for Sears Roebuck in Huron. He retired in 1982.
Allen was a member of American Lutheran Church, and the Moose Lodge in Huron. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and spending time with his family and friends. Allen was a very talented artist and took great enjoyment in his work, painting many beautiful prints for his family and friends.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his 3 daughters, Eleanor (Larry) Crabb of Glencoe, MN, Judith (Larry) Kobriger of Plankinton, and Joyce (Larry) Jansen of De Smet, SD; 12 grandchildren, Allen (Kelly) Crabb, Penny (Rick) Deckert, Peggy (Galen) Sundin, Christine (Rick Gorter) Kobriger, Elizabeth (Mark) Rosenbaum, Susan (Peter) Martin, James (Samantha) Kobriger, Jeffrey Kobriger, Lisa (Jason) Ziegeldorf, Lora (Friedrich) Trost, Linda (Mike) Gilbertson, and Lesley (Adam) Berry; 23 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; brother-in-law Keith (Irene) Rearick; and many nieces and nephews.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernita in 2005; great grandson, Alec Ziegeldorf; 5 brothers, Martin, Alfred, Jim, Clarence, and Harvey Johnson; 5 sisters, Ella Foster, Josie Johnson, Ann Borst, Elsie Johnson, and Helen Johnson.
