Obituary

Alice Frye, age 83, formerly of 420 5th Ave. S., Alpena, SD, and currently of StoneyBrook Suites of Brookings, SD, died Thursday, March 29, 2007, at the Brookings Hospital. Her funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday, April 2nd, at the United Parish of Alpena with Rev. Sarah Herman officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 5:00 PM Sunday afternoon at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Monday morning. Alice Frye was born Alice Jeanette Johnson on October 13, 1923, the third child of Lubert and Jennie (Heesman) Johnson, at Bruce, SD. At the age of 9 she moved with her parents to Woodstock, MN, in Pipestone County where she attended country school and graduated from the 8th grade. She graduated from high school in 1941 at Lake Wilson, MN. On October 20, 1941, Alice married George Frye. On June 10, 1942, when George entered the U.S. Army, Alice moved to Iowa to live with her parents. She was employed there until 1944 when she returned to South Dakota to help Georges father on the farm. When George was discharged in 1945 he joined Alice on the family farm, and they took over the operation in 1947. They moved to Alpena in 1979. Alice was an active member of the United Parish of Alpena, 25-year member of Carlyle Extension Club, the Progressive Club, and a craft club. She served on the Election Board, blood drives, PTA, Sunday school teacher for several years, and a life-time member of the Owens-Kunze American Legion Post #116 Auxiliary of Alpena. Alice enjoyed all of her household duties especially baking lemon pies and banana cream pies for her grandchildren, plus canning beet-pickles. Crocheting was her favorite pastime making a large afghan for each grandchild, and baby afghans for the great grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, George, Sr. of Alpena; 3 children, George (Barbara) Frye, Jr., of Lincoln, NE, Vernon (Judy) Frye of Baltic, SD, and Jo Ann (Jerry) Jorgensen of Brookings; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers; 1 sister; and 1 grandchild.
