Obituary

Alice Christensen, age 88, of Wolsey died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at her home in Wolsey, SD, surounded by her family.

Her Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 17, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church in Wolsey, SD, with burial at the Wolsey Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to service at the Church on Monday.

Alice Margaret Christensen, daughter of Richard P. and Cecilia (Noonan) Gallagher, was born January 9, 1923, at Tappen, ND. She attended school in Tappen County School System for eight years and then attended Tappen High School.

On September 4, 1940, she married Louis Christensen Jr. at Moorhead, Minnesota. They lived in Cleveland, North Dakota, until 1945, when they moved to Bonilla, South Dakota, where Louie was manager of the grain elevator for 4 years. They then moved to Wolsey, South Dakota, in 1949 where Louie managed the Sexauer elevator for 38 years.

Alice started selling Avon in 1959 and sold for 25 years. She frequently could be seen anywhere in town walking to deliver Avon products to her friends. Her hobbies were doing crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and working in her yard and garden. She was a huge sports fan and kept score for Wolsey High School basketball games along with her husband for years. Alice was a diehard Minnesota Twins and Viking fan. She looked forward to attending Twins games with family and enjoyed watching any baseball, football, basketball, or rodeo game on TV. She had lived in the same house for 62 years.

She was a member of Wolsey Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Exercise Club, and Birthday Club. She was a volunteer at the Wolsey Senior Center for quite some time and was active in her church with the fall supper, soup suppers and other events.

She loved her family and never missed a wedding. She always jumped at the chance to travel which included traveling to most of the western states, Texas, Washington DC, as well as Canada. At the age of sixty-eight, she hiked back to Hidden Lake in Glacier National Park, MT.

Survivors include 3 sons, Dennis (Pat) of Gillette, WY., Bill (Kathy) of Circle Pines, MN., and Allen (Jan) of Iowa City, IA.; 2 daughters, Carol Yost of Minneola, KS., and Jeanette (Dennis) Crawford of Rice Lake, WI; 12 grandchildren, JoLynn Schiller, Julie Ryan, Brad Christensen, Bryan Christensen, Scott Christensen, Brenda Grams, Chad Christensen, Brett Christensen, Lance Christensen, Rick Yost, Mike Yost, Kelly Crawford; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Verna McCurdy, Moses Lake, WA. and Edna McCurdy, Republic, WA.; 1 sister-in-law, Lorraine Gallagher of Kirkland, WA.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis in 1989, 5 brothers, Lester, Harry, Leonard, Clarence and Kenneth Gallagher; 3 sisters, Hazel Glum, Josie Gallagher, and Mildred Hanson; and granddaughter, Angela Margaret Christensen.
