Albert Piper was born June 22, 1935, to Olie and Zazel (Morrisey) Piper in Huron, South Dakota. He grew up on the Piper Homestead north of Lake Byron, attending school in Huron. Following graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army on May 5, 1958 and was Honorably discharged. Albert married Kathryn (Welsh) on April 15, 1961 in Huron. In 1962, he surprised Kay by coming home and telling her he bought a farm. They spent the next 51 years living and farming in the rural Gann Valley area until retiring and moving to Miller and later to Sioux Falls.
Albert loved spending time at the Highway Store visiting with the neighbors and watching the Nascar races while teaching everyone to put peanuts in a glass bottle of Pepsi. He loved camping and hunting, but loved fishing with friends and family the most. Albert loved passing on the joy of fishing to his grandkids (even if they caught bigger fish than him) and loved spending time with his family. He loved growing tomatoes and was a carpenter, remodeling the farmhouse, building many toy boxes and was proud of his Black Walnut trees using the wood to build many beautiful coffee tables. This past summer, Albert celebrated his 90th birthday with an open house with all of the people he loved most.
Albert is survived by Kay, his wife of 64 years, his children Kevin (Tina) Piper of Huron. Kathi Piper of Aberdeen. Karen (DelRoy) Brandenburg of Huron, Kim (Bill) Grell of Granger, Iowa, and Kristi (Mark) Hensley of Brandon. Albert is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Rachel Scadden, Aaron Wescott, Katelynn (Stephen) Brown. Mariah (James) Elias. Nathan (Brandi) Brandenburg, Nick (Sam) Brandenburg. Jack Grell (Courtney Cohrs). Sydney, Katherine, Elizabeth and Olivia Grell. Cole (Kjerstin) Hensley. Calli (Brady) London, Emily Hensley, as well as many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Albert's surviving siblings include his sister Mary Ellen (Jim) Aamot of Brookings, brother George Piper of Huron, and sister-in-law, Joyce Piper-Hampton of Huron.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bill Piper, sister, Macy Davis, and nephew, Brad Davis.
