Obituary

Albert Al Metter, Jr., age 67, of rural Huron, SD, died Monday, December 4, 2006, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 7, at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Derek Baum officiating. Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Iroquois. Friends may call this Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday morning. The family will be present from 4:30 to 6:30 PM this Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Albert Metter was born on May 17, 1939, to Albert and Emma (Schley) Metter, Sr., in Huron, SD. The family was living on a farm in Pearl Creek Township, rural Cavour, at the time of his birth, and where Al grew up. After completion of his formal education he remained on the family farm and eventually took over the farm operation. On August 3, 1957, Al married Patricia Downs. They lived on and operated the family farm. On August 9, 1964, Al married Sharon Atz and they operated the family farm until 1976 when they moved into Huron. During this time Al also worked as a carpenter, auctioneer, and truck driver. On July 6, 1991, Al married Judy Burnett and they lived on a farm north of Huron. Al continued to work as a carpenter, auctioneer, and truck driver, in addition to working for various farmers in the area. He was a past member of the Moose Lodge, Saddle Club, Rabbit Club, and Horse Organizations in which he showed the horses that he raised. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, working with livestock and horses, playing cards, dancing, country music, and cooking. He met each morning for coffee with members of his horse organization at the Plains Restaurant. Al was a very social person who loved to invite friends and relatives over to the house to share meals with his family. He enjoyed making oyster stew and homemade ice cream which he would always share with his friends. He is survived by his wife, Judy of Huron; 5 sons, Kevin Metter and his special friend Natalie Holler of Huron, Jim Metter of Scottsbluff, NE, Rick Metter of Huron, Jerry Metter of Aurora, SD, and Kyle Metter of Huron; 2 daughters, Dawn Heath and her special friend Spencer Merchant of Huron, and Teresa Ertel and her special friend Randy Johnson of Lake Wales, FL and Rapid City, SD; 7 grandchildren, Troy (Spring) Metter, Tanya (Rex Stas) Metter, Corey Metter, Zachary Metter, Ashley Metter, Brittney Metter, and Cody Metter; 9 great grandchildren, Lucas Metter, Danyell Metter, Devon Metter, Ashley McBride, Brandon McBride, Taylor Metter, Tristen Metter, Trevor Metter, and Destiny Metter; 2 brothers, Clifford (Carol) Metter of Iroquois, and Raymond (LaVonne) Metter of Huron; and 1 sister, Margery (Marion) Dubro of Iroquois. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother, Cecil Metter; and 2 sisters-in-law, Veda Metter, and Mavis Metter.
