Obituary

Agnes Ames, age 92, of Huron, died Monday, November 1, 2010, at SunQuest Healthcare Center.

Her funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 5, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at St. Martin Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 4, from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 5-7 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. followed by a Catholic Daughters Rosary; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service..

Agnes Ames was born Susan Agnes OConnor, daughter of Robert and Mary (Humphrey) OConnor, on September 23, 1918, in Ashton, SD. She grew up on the family farm in Athol, SD, and graduated from Athol High School in 1936. She remained on the family farm for the next 5 years.

On February 20, 1941, Agnes married Earl Ames in Redfield, SD. They lived in Redfield for a short period of time prior to moving to Huron. In the mid 1950s Agnes began working as a clerk at Woolworths Store. After the store closed, Ben Franklin Crafts Store moved into that facility and Agnes continued to work for them until 1974. In 1975 she began work as a custodian, along side of her husband, at the Catholic Church of the Resurrection. She officially retired in 1998.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, and a 50-year member of Catholic Daughters. Her many interests included sewing and crocheting in her earlier years, fishing, bingo, and an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. Above all, Agnes cherished the time with her family, especially the grandchildren.

She is survived by 2 children, Lawrence Larry (Carolyn) Ames of Huron, and Mary Deuchar of Pierre; 1 son-in-law, Wayne (Kathy) Waldron of Huron; 1 daughter-in-law, Beverly Ames of Huron; 9 grandchildren, Hally (Rod) Witte, Michelle (Bob) Carlson, Shelly Ames, Jennifer (Brent) Danielson, Jamie (Nikki) Schnabel, Rachel Ames, Barbara (Mark) Ransom, Robert (Tina) Ames, and Dale Ames; 17 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Alley (Eunice) OConnor of Aberdeen; 1 sister, Alicia Van Houten of Redfield; and 1 sister-in-law, Midge OConnor of Redfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Earl on December 30, 1999; 1 son, Joseph Ames; 1 daughter, Marlene Waldron; 1 son-in-law, Jim Deuchar; 1 brother, Cletus OConnor; and 1 brother-in-law, Burton Van Houten.
