Agnes (Aggie) Orth, the daughter of Gustave and Johanna (Edelman) Orth, was born on March 5, 1919 on the family farm near Alpena, SD. Her family farmed near Alpena where she attended school until the 8th grade. Aggie married Homer Decker on August 26, 1945 in Huron, SD. Aggie worked a variety of jobs in her lifetime. Aggie worked at Humphrey's Drug Store in Huron. She also spent several years working at the Swift plant. In 1952 Aggie was hired in Huron as the first female substitute on a rural mail route. She spent 34 years working for the US postal service as a rural substitute and full time carrier. She retired in 1987. The friends she made on the mail route meant the world to her. Homer and Aggie loved to travel. They spent many winters in their camper in places like Mexico. Aggie also loved her pets. She had a particular soft spot for her mini bull dog, Lucky and her orange cat, Fritze. Aggie spent hours having coffee with her friends at McDonalds. Aggie was a lifetime member of the Weight Watchers club in Huron. She was passionate about "counting her points" and made many friends there. Several years ago Aggie suffered a severe stroke. Even though she lost the ability to speak, she never lost the ability to communicate. Aggie was a lifelong member of the American Lutheran Church. After her retirement Aggie spent countless hours volunteering at Huron Regional Medical Center. Grateful for having shared in Aggie's life are her brother Albert Orth and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Homer in 1993; her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Almond and Lydia Orth; sister and brother-in-law, Alda and Henry Hilgeman; and sister-in-law, Luella Orth.
