Kenneth Helseth, age 92, of Huron, died Thursday, August 2, 2012, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
His memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday, August 6, 2012, at Huron Christian Church with military honors provided by the Huron Veterans Council.
Memorial visitation with family present will be from noon to 2 pm Monday, August 6, 2012, at the church.
Alvin Kenneth Helseth was born on December 28, 1919, in Spink, Union County, South Dakota, to John and Edith (Kukuk) Helseth. When Ken was 5 years old, he and his family moved to Huron. He graduated from Huron High School in 1938.
Ken joined the U.S. Army in February of 1941. He served overseas in Africa and Italy, where he was wounded 3 times. He was awarded the Purple Heart with 3 oak leaf clusters. Ken was honorably discharged in June 1945.
Ken married Viola Converse on May 24, 1941, and they had 5 children.
Ken worked for the Post Office as a letter carrier for 29 years. After retiring, he drove a school bus for 12 years.
He married Judy Wood on June 25, 1987, in Huron, where they lived until his death.
Ken was a member of Huron Christian Church, Huron Area Senior Center, and VFW Forest McMullen Post #1776.
Ken will be remembered as a kind and gentle husband, father, and grandfather.
Ken is survived by his wife, June of Huron; five children, George (Konnie) Helseth of Omak, WA, Kyle (Mona) Helseth of Sioux Falls, Ronald (Carol) Helseth of Hartford, SD, Karen Kleinsasser of Huron, and Danny (Kim) Helseth of Rapid City; six grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister, Janice (Galen) Nelson of Huron; several nieces and nephews.
Ken is preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Esther, Eleanor, Bernice, and Beverly.
