Life Legacy


Betty Beckman, age 65, of Lake Preston, SD, formerly of Cavour, SD, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Good Samaritan Center in De Smet, SD.

Her funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with a prayer service at 7:40 p.m.; or Friday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church.


Betty Beckman was born Betty Lou Jernigan, daughter of Ray and Nina (Garner) Jernigan, on December 20, 1946, in Goldsboro, NC. At the age of 2 she moved with her family to Richmond, VA, where she received her education and graduated from Henrico County High School in 1966. She then attended and graduated as a beautician from the School of Cosmetology in Richmond.

On April 20, 1968, Betty married Bruce Beckman in Richmond, VA. For the next couple of years she worked as a hairdresser in Richmond.

In the Fall of 1970 the couple moved to Cavour, SD. She renewed her license as a hairdresser in South Dakota and worked for a couple of years for the Walk In Beauty Shop. Later she worked as a cook at the elementary school in Cavour; a cook for the Senior Center in Yale; an associate at JC Penny’s in Huron; and at Jack Links LSI in Alpena.

She was a past member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Yale and presently a member at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. She also was a member of the church Ladies Aide and taught Sunday school and Bible school; past President of the PTO at Cavour Elementary School in the mid 1980’s; and the Laugh & Learn Extension Club in the Yale/ Cavour area.

Betty enjoyed camping; cross stitching; NASCAR; watching football (the Washington Redskins) and baseball (the New York Yankees); and cooking for her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce of Lake Preston, SD; 4 children, Pamela Ann Rose of Sioux Falls, Brian (Melissa) Beckman of Aberdeen, Corey Beckman of Sioux Falls, and Jennifer (Craig) Klein of Aberdeen; 3 grandchildren, Kayla Rose Black of Huron, Braylen L. Beckman of Aberdeen, and Cody Klein of Aberdeen; 2 brothers, Donald (Shirley) Jernigan of Ashland, and Steve Jernigan of Richmond, VA; mother and father-in-law, Elmer and Vylene Beckman of Huron; 2 sisters-in-law, Marlene Jernigan of Richmond, VA, and Doreen (Kurt) Peterson of Cottonwood, MN.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; 1 brother, William Jernigan; and 1 nephew, Phillip Jernigan.
